What is a Twitter Party? You may see the occasional #hashtag trending or a bunch of tweeters tweeting about a particular topic one night, but what does it all mean and how do you get involved?

A twitter party is a fast and fun virtual party, using the twitter platform. Usually held in the evening, twitter parties typically last 1-2 hours and are a wonderful way for people to connect and discuss a topic of choice. Most twitter parties have an expert panelist and party host to keep the party on topic.

How does a twitter party work? Twitter users tweet with a specified Hashtag (#) for the party. The party host will announce the hashtag prior to the event. If you look at the twitter party calendar, parties are listed by the hashtag (#). Users use their tweet chat client to search for the hashtag and join in the conversation. Tweetdeck and Tweetgrid make following a twitter party much easier.

So Wednesday night I joined a Twitter Party. It was a party with Tide, Downy and GE Appliances. Hashtag #SmartDispense. It started at 8pm and lasted till around 9:20. It was hosted by @AudreyMcClellan and @VeraSweeney who host many twitter parties so if you are not following them on twitter I would. We spent that 1:20 minutes chatting about laundry, laundry needs and laundry must-haves! Of course… you need Tide, Downy and one of GE’s amazing Smart Dispense washer and dryer machines.

Twitter parties are a great way to connect with new friends using the power of social media. People get together for fun, friends and support. Often times twitter parties have some great prizes to give away.

The party was intense. I had my Tweetgrid set up and that made it much easier to follow along.

They were giving away 8 total prizes that night. With the grand prize being a YEAR’S SUPPLY of both Tide Original and Downy April Fresh. They were also giving away a Smart Dispense washer/dryer set from GE Appliances. Which retails for: $2,298 ($1,199 for the washer, $1,099 for the dryer).

We tweeted along and several prizes were announced. I was just hoping I was doing everything right, it seemed easy enough. It was fun and the time was passing very quickly. They had so many prizes it seemed like they were announcing a new winner every few minutes. I couldn’t gage how they were choosing winners and I wasn’t sure what method they were using. My husband kept asking me ‘What are you doing?’ I’m at a twitter party, trying to win a washer/dryer. I think he thought I was a little crazy there for a minute.

I actually joined this party because I was looking for some new people to follow me. I thought this was a good target audience “moms” mainly do laundry (except me my husband does our laundry : ) Also I really wanted a new washer and dryer. We have a front loader and I hate it. It has had to be repaired a few times and I just don’t like it. I thought what the hell maybe I will win.

Well you know what I did! They were getting all set up to announce that grand prize winner….and it was me! I screamed I won! I won!

It was great! Lots of people were tweeting congratulations and because the whole party was intense and then you see you name up on the screen, I couldn’t believe it. It was awesome.

So next time you see a twitter party coming up. I encourage you to give it a try. It’s a lot of fun, goes by quick and it’s fun to be part of what is trending on twitter! Also thank you again to @AudreyMcClellan, @VeraSweeney, @Tide, @Downy and @GE_Appliances.
